PROTECTIVE BOLLARDS

AS 2890 recognises the use of protective bollards, where required to protect buildings, pedestrian areas and fixed objects from vehicle damage.

For most carparks, the objective is not hostile vehicle protection — it is reducing repeated damage, protecting assets and keeping the development safe, functional and presentable.

Impact Recovery Bollards provide a low cost alternative where low-speed impact resilience, reduced maintenance and whole-of-life cost savings are the priority. Certified crash-rated bollards should be used where vehicle containment is required

Where formal vehicle containment is required, a certified crash-tested system should be specified. Where the objective is

  • Low-speed impact resilience

  • Reduced maintenance and

  • Reusable footings

an Impact Recovery Bollard may provide a more practical and cost-effective solution. See below for details on both options.

Designed to protect people & assetts

Impact tested in accordance with AS/NZS 3845.2:2017  classified as a ‘road safety device’.

Meets Australian Crash Barrier Standard AS/NZS 3845:1999 (60 km/h).

Bollards demonstrated they were capable of preventing an errant pedestrian vehicle from entering an area. The impact absorbing cartridge crushed and the bollard required replacing.

Designed to provide protection & reduce maintenance costs

Impact Recovery Bollards are designed for low-speed environments where repeated bollard damage is common.

They absorb and manage impact through controlled deflection, Impact Recovery Rings and a replaceable resistance core — helping protect the surrounding footing and allowing faster reinstatement after impact.

Use Impact Recovery Bollards where the objective is low-speed resilience, reusable footings, shock absorbing components and bollard casing following multiple low and high speed impacts.

ENERGY ABSORBING BOLLARDS

The Energy Absorbing Bollard (EAB) is designed to a TL-0 containment level, meaning it is capable of halting vehicles weighing 1600kg while travelling speeds of up to 60 kmhr

  • EAB has been crash tested in accordance with AS3845.2 demonstrating they can contain a 1600kg vehicle at 51.9km/h with an Impact Energy of 166.3kJ

  • Another test conducted with a Concrete slab at the surface showed they can contain a 1,615kg vehicle at 62.5km/h with an Impact Energy of 243.4kJ, test no. 21062-02.

Bollards are one metre high (installed in-ground using a Reo cage and concrete footing) available in a galvanised steel and powder coated finish.

The EAB is designed to a TL-0 containment level, meaning it is capable of halting vehicles weighing 1600kg while travelling speeds of up to 60 kilometers an hour.

The EAB Cartridge is filled with VVH Grade Polystyrene foam which increases its shock absorbing capabilities, making it compliant with AS/NZS 1698:2006

MAINTENANCE EAB

When impacted the bollard and surrounding foundations will show signs of damage and the impact absorbing cartridge will need replacing.

(Damage to the cartridge will result in the above-the-ground bollard not being straight.)

  1. The bollard is removed from the cartridge.

  2. The concrete footing needs to be broken using a jack hammer and crowbar.

  3. The damaged concrete footing must be removed and disposed of

  4. A new footing, a new cartridge, and reinforcing reo cage must be installed and filled with 30-40MPa concrete to repair the damaged footing.

MAINTENANCE - IMPACT RECOVERY OPTION

When impacted the bollard and surrounding foundations will be resuable.

  1. The bollard is removed from the footing

  2. The internal resistance core is replaced

  3. The bollard is reinstated
