Selecting a PROTECTIVE BOLLARD
AS 2890 recognises the use of protective devices, including bollards, where required to protect buildings, pedestrian areas and fixed objects from vehicle damage. It also requires protective devices to be clearly visible to drivers.
For most carparks, the objective is not hostile vehicle protection — it is reducing repeated damage, protecting assets and keeping the development safe, functional and presentable.
Impact Recovery Bollards are recommended where low-speed impact resilience, reduced maintenance and whole-of-life cost savings are the priority. Certified crash-rated bollards should be used where vehicle containment is required
In many carpark and low-speed development environments, bollards are not installed as road safety barriers or hostile-vehicle mitigation devices.

The real cost
This council bought a cheap pine bollard, but soon found that replacing it was definitely NOT cheap, costing them more than $1000 several times a year.
Stainless Steel
Many people confuse Stainless steel Tube (which is like tinfoil) with Pipe which is impact resistant. A second problem is poor quality imports- beware cheap imports they will cost you dearly and look terrible in no time
Steel Bollards
Historically steel was the most popular choice, but steel is not impact resistant, rigid and unforgiving. A steel Bollard less than 5 mm wall thickness will bend upon impact, scuff, dent (fade and chip if powder coated or painted) - looking unsightly in no time.
Surface Mount
When a surface mount bollard is impacted either the base bends or the bolts rip from the concrete or asphalt. Although often sold as protection against ram raids- if the welding holds the protection is provided by the strength of the base plate and securing bolts
In-ground
If you increase the strength of the bollard, the impact force is then directed toward the footing, and as something's got to give, the footing is dislodged creating a litigation risk and costly repairs - We have a solution
Large footings still get damaged!
By increasing the size of the concrete footing reduces the risk of the footing being dislodged but doesn't stop it from being damaged when impacted- We have a solution.
Spring loaded disaster
Spring loaded bollards provide no resistance or protection whatsoever - creating dangerous litigation risks and become "floppy" over time - We have a solution.
